Ideas for Getting involved
The Cornwall Wildlife Trust, like most Trusts, relies very much on
volunteer assistance, both for practical work in the field and with
office-based administration, management planning and all manner of
other things.
There are many ways in which you can get involved, depending how
much time you have available and what type of work interests you.
Here is a list of some particular projects we have at the moment
but if you feel you can offer your expertise in other areas, please
contact us on (01872) 273939. We will be delighted to hear
from you.
Out and about:
Mink and otter Spotters
To help survey for otters
and mink around Cornwall. Training will be provided to identify
field signs including tracks and droppings. No previous experience
necessary. Contact Kate
Stokes by email or call (01872) 273939 ext 214.
Handyperson
To look after the office grounds at Five
Acres:
- clearing leaves from paths
- general work on garden and buildings
Education volunteers
Join our team of enthusiastic education volunteers. We
have compiled some job descriptions as an example of the sort
of things our volunteers are involved in. Click
here to find out more.....
Volunteers to help maintain our Groundforce Garden
If you can offer even a couple of hours a week in our wildlife
garden for weeding/maintenance work, please contact
Caroline Viner.
Magazine delivery
Our volunteers save us an enormous amount of money in postage,
when our magazines go out. It's only three times a year
and we always need more deliverers. You've heard the saying
"many hands make light work" ? Help us put it
into practice. Andrea would be delighted to hear from you
on (01872) 273939 ext 206. Andrea works Monday to Wednesday, but
you can always leave a message and she will get back to you.
Bodyline
Veterinary pathologist Vic Simpson has begun his "retirement"
by setting up Britain's first ever Wildlife
Veterinary Investigation Centre, in partnership with the Cornwall
Wildlife Trust. We therefore need a network of volunteers
who would be prepared to deliver small bodies from their areas.
If you travel regularly to Truro, would you be prepared to go
on a list of couriers? Click
here for more details.
Speakers
To educate audiences of all ages on wildlife subjects and raise
awareness of the Trust and its work.
Seaquest volunteer spotters
Our Seaquest group
have a list of people on whom we can call to investigate if we
hear of a stranding or death by the shore. Advice and training
is available.
Working on Reserves
We can offer long-term (9-12 months) volunteer work in our Volunteer Reserves Estates Team. If you are interested in hearing more about working on the Trust’s nature reserves and learning practical land management methods, please ring 01872 273939 ext 278 for details.
Reserve wardening
Keep an eye on the Trust reserve in your area. Wardens are given
"how to" packs and plenty of contact with our expert
Reserves Team.
Help out on our Community Reserve
Join our Community Reserve Project Officer, at our Churchtown
Farm reserve in Liskeard to develop public access and enjoyment.
In the comfort of your own home:
Here are some things you can do in the comfort or your own home
or at our offices in Truro.
Items may need to be delivered or collected.
Event organisation
The Trust runs events
for its members and the general public, such as the annual "Grand
Fete". We should like to develop an annual "Walk for
Wild Cornwall". We also want to increase our presence at
local shows, etc. Do you have time to co-ordinate an event for
us from start to finish, or act as part of an organising team?
Organising news cuttings
Collating and filing all references to the Trust in the media.
Stuffing
Helping to "stuff" envelopes ready to post. We have
many mailings throughout the year both large and small.
Office based in Truro:
Data Entry Assistant
Working with the Recorder Support Officer in the Environmental
Records Centre to help in the data entry of biological records.
(Person spec: Able to work independently and accurately. Familiarity
with keyboard and PC. No knowledge of the wildlife of Cornwall
required, but some knowledge would be useful).
General office assistance
Help with those time-consuming but crucially important jobs -
in all departments.
Photocopying and filing
There are nearly always photocopying or filing jobs to do - it
seems unending!
These are just a few of the things for which we need volunteers.
If you can help in any other way, don't forget to contact Ba on
(01872) 273939 - she's waiting for your call.
