Bats, birds and butterflies in peaceful wildlife garden

With an emphasis on wildlife gardening, Trenarth is a regular favourite with visitors to Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Open Gardens scheme, and they will be opening again for the Trust on Sunday, August 5th.

Admission to the garden from 2.00pm to 5.00pm is £5 per adult, with under 16s free. Cream teas and beverages will be provided by Roddas and Cornish Coffee. Dogs on leads are allowed. Access for wheelchairs is limited.

Located at High Cross, Constantine, this beautiful four-acre garden is set around a 17th Century farmhouse in a lovely pastoral setting. There are wonderful panoramic views, with not a road in sight or sound to disturb the peace. Trenarth is gardened to promote abundant wildlife with water and bog features and plants to encourage birds, butterflies and insects all the year round. It is also home to a maternity roost of lesser horseshoe bats.

There is much to enjoy and see including a 16th Century courtyard, listed garden walls, gravel and palm area, unusual plants, yew rooms, vegetable garden, orchard and woodland area. An ancient green lane walk leads to the wildlife pond, through what would be bluebell woods in the spring, to Trenarth Bridge and then back up through another woodland footpath.

Younger visitors have not been forgotten, with a quirky and child friendly garden and a children’s garden trail. They are sure to find the toilet in a telephone box amusing!

Chris Betty, Communications Officer for the Trust says,

“Every year we look forward to visiting this splendid garden. If you have never been then now is your chance. It is a real gem. There is an emphasis on wildlife gardening here, and there is also the chance to meet some live bats.”

This is the eighth year running that the Trust has held their highly successful Open Gardens scheme, and there is still time to visit some more gardens in the scheme with South Bosent, Dobwalls opening on September 2nd and Marsh Villa Gardens, Par, on September 16th.
