Charter of the Sea
Charter of the Sea
As part of our Your Shore marine engagement work, we are bringing together the community of our county to discuss and create a new plan of action to promote nature recovery in their local marine environment, the ‘Charter of the Sea’.
Cornwall is home to one of the richest marine environments in the UK, an iconic coastal location, with some of the most recognisable views and landmarks in the country. Cornish waters include many important Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and is home to many weird and wonderful marine animals and plants, ranging from the fascinating critters on the shoreline… to the charismatic and incredible marine megafauna out to sea, all vital to our ocean’s ecosystems.
We want everyone to get involved and have a say in how to protect your local area by getting together to encourage and ignite nature recovery in this beautiful and inspiring area.
The Charter of the Sea is generated by the local community of the types of conservation actions and solutions that are needed to help protect the marine environment in Cornwall.
What is a 'Charter of the Sea'?
The Charter of the Sea is a new plan of action to promote nature recovery in the local marine environment, created and developed by the communities that live and work in the area. This will include local marine conservation priorities; current actions and community projects; and what resources and capacity there are in the local community.
It is designed to give the community a voice in decision making when related to the marine environment.
This initiative is being led by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust with amazing input from the Your Shore network local groups.
How do I have my say?
We currently have three iterations of the Charter currently in development – each tailored to specific locations to address both local issues and general environmental concerns. These include:
- Mounts Bay Charter of the Sea (2021-2023): This is available to view now and we welcome your feedback
- Fal and Helford Charter of the Sea: Open for online responses - rank your conservation priorities in our survey
- St Austell Bay Charter of the Sea: Join our first community workshop - book your space
