About the event
An ancient Cornish manor house dating in parts to the 15th century and probably earlier, with many later additions surrounding a delightful courtyard. The house overlooks a quiet wooded valley on a tributary to the River Camel. The valley is especially rich in birds, carpets of snowdrops in the meadow by stream, and bluebells in the spring. The house is surrounded by majestic oaks which have featured in the work of artist Tacita Dean. Shrub and perennial gardens surround the house with a sheltered former walled kitchen garden to the rear. Below the house is a wilder garden probably originally created in the Victorian era with springs and a pond. This area is currently undergoing restoration and promises to be once again a delightful dell garden with many interesting plants. Paddocks slope down to the river affording views back to the house and the leat serving an early hydro-electric plant.
