Gift Aid FAQs
What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a UK government scheme that allows charities like Cornwall Wildlife Trust to claim an extra 25p for every £1 you donate - at no extra cost to you. It means your donations can go even further in supporting our work to create a Cornwall where nature thrives!
How does Gift Aid work? Am I eligible?
If you’re a UK taxpayer, the Gift Aid scheme allows us to reclaim the tax you’ve already paid on your donation. For example, a £10 donation is worth £12.50 to us once Gift Aid is applied.
Even if you are not employed, you are still eligible if you are paying tax on any of the following:
- Personal or occupational pension.
- Stocks and shares.
- Bank and building society savings accounts.
- Rental income.
- Overseas and UK investment dividends.
How do I sign up for Gift Aid?
It’s easy! When you donate online or by post, simply tick the Gift Aid box or fill in the Gift Aid declaration form above. This allows us to claim the additional funds from the government.
Can I Gift Aid previous donations?
Yes, Gift Aid can be applied to donations you’ve made in the past four years, as long as you were a UK taxpayer during that time. Just let us know, and we can backdate the Gift Aid claim.
Do I need to sign a Gift Aid declaration every time I donate?
No, your Gift Aid declaration will cover all future donations unless you tell us otherwise. However, please let us know if your tax situation changes.
Can I cancel my Gift Aid declaration?
Yes, you can cancel your Gift Aid declaration at any time. Just contact us, and we’ll ensure your future donations are not included in the scheme.
What happens if I don’t pay enough tax?
If you stop paying enough tax, please let us know as soon as possible. If the amount of tax you’ve paid isn’t enough to cover the Gift Aid claims, you might be liable to repay the difference to HMRC.
Can Gift Aid be applied to all types of donations?
Gift Aid can be applied to personal donations of money made by cash, cheque, debit, or credit card. It doesn’t apply to donations made on behalf of someone else, or company and group donations.
How much extra does Gift Aid add to my donation?
With Gift Aid, we receive an extra 25p for every £1 you donate. So, a £20 donation becomes £25 at no additional cost to you.
