About the event

Cornwall Wildlife Trust Seaquest Southwest public seawatches take place from 11 AM to 1 PM on the third Sunday of every month at scenic coastal locations across Cornwall. These events are designed for anyone interested in marine wildlife, from beginners to seasoned wildlife enthusiasts. Led by experienced Seaquest coordinators and local marine experts, attendees will have the chance to observe and learn about marine species such as seals, whales, and dolphins, while contributing to valuable community science research. The event provides an engaging way to connect with the ocean and support marine conservation efforts.

Time: 11am – 1pm

The survey includes settling into a sea-watching session, scanning the water for wildlife sightings. There’s time for breaks, and attendees are encouraged to bring a hot drink in a flask, snacks, and binoculars if available. Please wear or bring warm, waterproof clothing, and sturdy footwear, as the event takes place on exposed cliffs, where weather conditions can be unpredictable. Safety is a top priority, so be prepared for uneven terrain and cold winds. Everyone is welcome, making it a perfect activity for families, individuals, and nature lovers alike.

Public Transport: To reach St Anthony's Head, take Go Cornwall Bus route 50 from Truro to St Mawes, passing through Probus, Tregony, and Portscatho. From St Mawes, take the seasonal Place Ferry to Place Quay, then walk 30 minutes (approx 1 mile) to military road and then along to St Anthony's Head. The coastal walk offers scenic views but includes uneven terrain and moderate inclines, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Bus tickets can be purchased on board with contactless payment, and ferry tickets are typically sold onboard. The ferry operates seasonally, so check timetables in advance, as services may be limited in winter or during adverse weather. For the most up-to-date schedules, visit the Go Cornwall Bus and Place Ferry websites.

Mobility

Parking: The site has a car park with a vehicle route from the main road that includes uneven surfaces, potholes, and speed bumps. The car park is open-air with a compacted gravel and earth surface. Parking is free for National Trust members, but charges apply for all other visitors. Clearly presented payment signs are visible, and maps and information boards are available. However, there are no Blue Badge parking bays or parent and child parking spaces. There is no designated drop-off point, and obstacles include a lack of pedestrian walkways to cross the car park.

Outdoor Space: Access to the area is via slight ramps or slopes, which are over 150cm wide, though there are no handrails. The area provides open countryside with surfaces including concrete, tarmac, grass, gravel, compacted earth, and uncompacted earth. Footpaths are available throughout the outdoor spaces, though most paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users, and there is no step-free access. The main areas feature steep ramps and slopes without handrails, including from the trailhead to the Battery Observation Post and Bird Hide. Bench seats are available along the paths for resting.

Toilet with Adaptations (Accessible - Right Hand Transfer): The accessible toilet is located about 35m from the car park, with access via a slight ramp/slope. The door is manual, opens outward, and has low contrast with the surrounding walls. It has a width of 90cm and a twist lock. The cubicle measures 155cm x 205cm with at least 150cm x 150cm of turning space. There are grab rails on the door, non-transfer side, and vertical rails on the transfer side, as well as a dropdown rail. Fixtures like the toilet roll holder, wash basin, and soap dispenser are within reach, but the hand dryer is not. Lighting levels are moderate to good, though the emergency pull cord is too low (less than 10cm from the floor). The cubicle includes a sanitary bin, but there are no full-length mirrors or coat hooks.

Standard Toilet (Female): This toilet requires access via 9 steps with no handrails, and the door is manual, permanently held open with high colour contrast. The cubicle’s widest door opening is 70cm, and the wash basin tap is push type. Lighting levels are low, and hand dryers are available. Standard Toilet (Male): Similar to the female toilet, access is via 8 steps with no handrails, and the door is manual, permanently held open with high colour contrast. The cubicle’s widest door opening is 70cm, and the wash basin tap is twist/turn. Lighting levels are low, and hand dryers are available.

Additional Tips: Wear weather-appropriate clothing, bring snacks if needed, and check local weather before starting. The coastal path can be windy and slippery.
