Dragonfly Surveyor

Dragonfly Surveyor

Location:
Five Acres Nature Reserve, Allet, Truro, Cornwall, TR4 9DJ

(C) Steve Jones

Dragonflies and damselflies are spectacular insects that, like many of our invertebrate species, are at risk of population decline. We aim to monitor changes in their populations on our nature reserves to manage them effectively. To understand how dragonflies use our sites, we need to collect data in a structured way.

Key Responsibilities
• Adopt designated points and transects on our reserves across Cornwall.
• Conduct surveys a minimum of three times per year between May and September.
• Use the mobile app ‘Survey123’ to record and submit survey data directly to us.

Requirements:
• Commitment to survey your adopted site(s) annually to ensure robust data collection.
• Enthusiasm for wildlife conservation and a keen interest in dragonflies and damselflies.

Experience and skills needed:

Experience in dragonfly surveying is desirable but not essential, however a reasonable level of dragonfly identification skills is necessary.

There is the option to partner up with other surveyors to adopt a site/point/transect, therefore at least one surveyor should be experienced in identifying dragonflies.

Locations:

  • Baker's Pit
  • Bartinney Meadows
  • Bissoe Valley
  • Bostraze
  • Breney Common
  • Devichoys Wood
  • Higher Trevilmick
  • Kennal Vale
  • Loggans Moor
  • North Predannack Downs
  • Pendarves Wood
  • Predannack Airfield
  • Truthwall Common
  • Upton Towans
  • Windmill Farm

Training provided:

You will receive a pack containing all essential information including:

  • How to carry out a survey
  • How to download and use Survey123
  • Your point/transect
  • Health and Safety

Practical considerations:

Surveys are conducted outdoors in good (sunny, low winds) weather. Some reserves are in remote locations so access to a car may be needed. Some sites require a reasonable level of physical fitness to survey due to their terrain.

Equal Opportunities:

We are committed to ensuring transparent and non-discriminatory recruitment and employment. As a progressive charitable organisation, we champion equal opportunities and welcome applications from all sections of the community, regardless of any protected characteristic.
